Use these Grade 8 questions to prepare for a test or your end-of-year exam. Cover each answer, try the question on paper, then compare your working. Write every step, because your teacher marks the method as well as the answer.

Question 1: Like terms

Simplify 3a + 2b − a + 4b. Group the like terms: (3a − a) + (2b + 4b). Answer: 2a + 6b.

Question 2: Equations

Solve 3x + 4 = 19. Subtract 4 from both sides: 3x = 15. Divide by 3. Answer: x = 5. Check: 3(5) + 4 = 19.

Question 3: Exponents

Calculate 2³ × 2⁴. When you multiply powers with the same base, add the exponents: 2⁷. Answer: 128.

Question 4: Integers

Calculate −3 × (−4) + 5. Multiply first: a negative times a negative is positive, so −3 × (−4) = 12. Then 12 + 5. Answer: 17.

Question 5: Area of a triangle

Find the area of a triangle with a base of 6 cm and a height of 4 cm. Area = ½ × base × height = ½ × 6 × 4. Answer: 12 cm².

Question 6: Percentages

Find 20% of 150. Write it as 20/100 × 150. Answer: 30.

Question 7: Substitution

If a = 3 and b = −2, find the value of 2a + 5b. Replace each letter with its value, using brackets so the signs stay clear: 2(3) + 5(−2) = 6 − 10. Answer: −4.

Question 8: Perimeter and area

A rectangle is 8 cm long and 5 cm wide. Find its perimeter and area. Perimeter = 2(8 + 5) = 26 cm. Area = 8 × 5 = 40 cm². Answer: 26 cm and 40 cm². Perimeter is measured in cm and area in cm².

Question 9: Ratio

Share R120 between two friends in the ratio 3 : 5. There are 3 + 5 = 8 equal parts, and each part is R120 ÷ 8 = R15. Answer: R45 and R75. Check: 45 + 75 = 120.

Frequently asked questions

What order do I work in?

Brackets first, then exponents, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right.

How can I check an equation's answer?

Substitute your answer back into the original equation. If both sides match, it's correct.

How should I practise for my Grade 8 exam?

Do a few questions from each topic every day instead of one long session before the exam. Redo the ones you got wrong without looking.
