How To Improve Your Maths Marks Fast

Realistic ways to move your Matric Maths mark by 10–20% in 6–8 weeks. No magic — just deliberate practice with past papers.

Most learners can lift their Maths mark by 10–20% in 6–8 weeks. The trick isn't more hours — it's more deliberate hours.

Stop re-reading the textbook

Reading feels productive. It isn't. Active recall — doing problems, getting them wrong, fixing them — is what moves marks.

Practise weak topics, not strong ones

Most learners drill the topics they like. Flip it: spend 70% of your time on the topics you score lowest in. Use the Resources hub to find topic-specific practice.

Mark honestly

Half marks for 'I would have got it right' is how learners fool themselves into a 50% that becomes 35% in the real exam.

Know where the marks are

Paper 1: algebra about 25 marks, sequences and series 25, functions 35, finance 15, differential calculus 35 and probability 15. Paper 2: statistics about 20, analytical geometry 40, trigonometry 50, and Euclidean geometry and measurement 40. A small gain in a 35- or 50-mark topic moves your total more than perfecting a 15-mark one.

Show your working

Method (M) and consistent accuracy (CA) marks reward correct working even when the final answer is wrong. A bare answer with no working can lose most of the marks for a question, so write every step.

Fix the small things first

  • Write the formula before you substitute.
  • Put brackets around negative numbers when you substitute.
  • Keep full calculator precision until the last line.
  • Give the answer in the form asked for: rounded, simplified or with units.

Use the memo to learn what is rewarded

Read the memo for questions you got right too. It shows which steps earn marks, so next time you can write exactly those steps without extra working that costs time.

A 6-week plan

  • Weeks 1–2: your weakest Paper 1 topic, one past-paper question a day.
  • Weeks 3–4: your weakest Paper 2 topic, the same way.
  • Week 5: two full papers under timed conditions, marked with the memo.
  • Week 6: redo every question you lost marks on, without help.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really improve in 6 weeks?

Yes — going from 40% to 55%, or 60% to 75%, is realistic with daily 45-minute practice sessions and proper marking.

How many past papers should I do?

Aim for at least the last five years of NSC papers, written under timed conditions and marked with the memo.

What should I do in the week before the exam?

Write one full timed paper of each, redo the questions you got wrong, and review formulas and theorems. Don't start new topics.
