Grade 12 Mathematics Paper 2 is the geometry, trigonometry and statistics paper. It carries 150 marks and runs for 3 hours. It's the paper where neat diagrams and a sharp pencil are worth real marks.
Paper 2 mark allocation (NSC/CAPS)
- Statistics — ~20 marks
- Analytical Geometry — ~40 marks
- Trigonometry — ~50 marks
- Euclidean Geometry and Measurement — ~40 marks
Statistics: start strong
Statistics usually opens the paper and rewards calculator skill. Practise entering data in stats mode for the mean, standard deviation and regression line, and learn to describe skewness and correlation in words that refer to the data in the question.
Analytical geometry: build on each answer
Analytical geometry questions are built around one diagram, and each part feeds the next: a gradient becomes a perpendicular line, a midpoint becomes a centre, a centre becomes a circle equation. Write every intermediate answer clearly so you can reuse it, and so a later slip still earns consistent-accuracy marks.
The Trig section is half the paper
Identities, general solutions, the sine/cosine/area rules, and 2D/3D trig problems together total ~50 marks. If you fix nothing else, fix trig — the ROI is the highest in the entire NSC.
Euclidean geometry: write the reason every time
Markers cannot award a mark without a stated reason. 'Tan-chord', 'opp ∠s cyclic quad', '∠s in same segment' — write the abbreviation next to every statement. Most learners lose 6–10 geometry marks purely by forgetting reasons.
A Paper 2 time plan
- About 1.2 minutes per mark: a 20-mark statistics question deserves about 24 minutes.
- If you cannot start a Euclidean geometry rider, move on and come back to it with fresh eyes.
- Keep 10 minutes at the end to check trigonometric solutions against the given interval.
