Quadratic inequality

An inequality like x² − x − 12 < 0, solved with a sketch or sign table. CAPS Grade 11 definition, worked example and related algebra practice.

An inequality like x² − x − 12 < 0, solved with a sketch or sign table.

Definition

A quadratic inequality compares a quadratic expression with zero using <, ≤, > or ≥. You solve it by finding the critical values (the roots) and deciding where the parabola is above or below the x-axis.

Worked example

x² − x − 12 < 0 factorises to (x − 4)(x + 3) < 0, so −3 < x < 4.

x² + x − 6 ≥ 0 gives (x + 3)(x − 2) ≥ 0, so x ≤ −3 or x ≥ 2.

Where it appears in the exam

Quadratic inequality is part of the algebra section of CAPS Grade 11 Mathematics and is examined in Paper 1 of the November exam.

Step-by-step method

  1. Move everything to one side so the other side is 0.
  2. Factorise to find the critical values.
  3. Sketch the parabola (or use a sign table).
  4. Choose the interval(s) with the required sign.

Common mistake

Choosing the interval between the roots for a 'greater than' inequality on a parabola that opens upwards.
