Grade 10 functions: linear, parabola y = ax² + q, hyperbola y = a/x + q, exponential y = a·bˣ + q and trig graphs, with domain, range and asymptotes.
Functions and graphs are about 30 marks of Grade 10 Paper 1. You work with four families in the form y = a·f(x) + q: straight lines, parabolas y = ax² + q, hyperbolas y = a/x + q and exponential graphs y = a·bˣ + q. The trig graphs y = a sin x + q, y = a cos x + q and y = a tan x + q appear in Paper 2.
For each family you need to know the effect of a (shape and stretch) and q (vertical shift), sketch the graph from its equation, find intercepts, asymptotes, domain and range, and find the equation from a sketch. Grade 11 adds horizontal shifts (p), so understanding a and q now makes the next step simple.
a = 2 > 0, so the parabola opens upwards and its minimum value is q = −3. The range is y ≥ −3.
For y = a/x + q, the asymptotes are x = 0 and y = q. So x = 0 and y = 1.
Set h(x) = 0: 2ˣ = 4 = 2², so x = 2. The x-intercept is (2; 0). The y-intercept is h(0) = 1 − 4 = −3.
No. Grade 10 uses the form y = a·f(x) + q only. Horizontal shifts (p), such as y = a(x + p)² + q, are introduced in Grade 11.
A line that a graph approaches but never touches. In Grade 10, hyperbolas have a vertical and a horizontal asymptote, and exponential graphs have a horizontal asymptote.
The sine, cosine and tangent graphs are examined with trigonometry in Paper 2. Paper 1 covers the linear, quadratic, hyperbolic and exponential functions.
