Grade 10 Mathematics

The complete Grade 10 Mathematics hub: every CAPS topic for Paper 1 and Paper 2, official past papers, practice papers with worked answers and a formula…

Grade 10 is the first year of the FET Phase, and the maths you learn now carries straight through to Matric. Factorising, exponents, functions, trigonometry and analytical geometry all start here and get harder each year, so Grade 10 is the best time to build strong habits.

This hub links every CAPS Grade 10 topic guide, split by Paper 1 and Paper 2, with worked examples, common mistakes and exam tips. You'll also find official past papers, our practice papers with worked answers, and a Grade 10 formula sheet.

Grade 10 topics

How you're assessed

  • Paper 1 (100 marks, 2 hours): algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities (about 30), number patterns (about 15), functions and graphs (about 30), finance and growth (about 10) and probability (about 15).
  • Paper 2 (100 marks, 2 hours): statistics (about 15), analytical geometry (about 15), trigonometry (about 40), and Euclidean geometry and measurement (about 30).
  • Mark allocations follow the CAPS examination guidelines; your school's paper may vary by a few marks.
  • The November exam is set by your school or province and makes up most of your final mark, with school-based assessment for the rest.

Study plan

  1. Master factorising first: it's used in equations, functions and simplifying fractions.
  2. Learn the special angles (30°, 45°, 60°) without a calculator: trigonometry is 40% of Paper 2.
  3. For functions, practise sketching each graph from its equation and finding the equation from a sketch.
  4. Write geometry answers with a reason for every statement.
  5. Do full practice papers under timed conditions: 2 hours, 100 marks.
  6. Snap every question you get wrong and redo it a week later.

Frequently asked questions

Is Grade 10 maths much harder than Grade 9?

It's a big step: new topics such as trigonometry and functions appear, and the pace is faster. Learners who keep up with algebra practice from the start of the year cope best.

Do Grade 10 marks count for university?

Universities mainly use your Grade 11 and Grade 12 results, but the skills you build in Grade 10 decide how well you do in those years.

Where can I find Grade 10 past papers?

Our Grade 10 papers page links official common papers and memos from the Western Cape Education Department portal, plus Snap&Learn practice papers with worked answers.

Can Snap&Learn help with Grade 10 homework?

Yes. Set your grade to Grade 10 and snap any question: the explanation uses only Grade 10 methods, such as factorising instead of the quadratic formula, and shows every step.

Snap&Learn gives South African Matric learners instant, CAPS-aligned, step-by-step Mathematics solutions. Snap or upload a question and the AI shows every method mark the way the NSC memo awards them. Your first three AI solutions are free.
