Grade 10 Maths Practice Paper 2

A Grade 10 CAPS-style Paper 2 practice test: statistics, analytical geometry, trigonometry, Euclidean geometry and measurement, with worked answers.

This practice paper covers every Grade 10 Paper 2 topic in proportion to the CAPS weightings: statistics, analytical geometry, trigonometry (the biggest section), and Euclidean geometry and measurement.

Give yourself 45 minutes. Have your calculator in degree mode, and write a reason for every geometry statement.

Topics covered

  • Measures of central tendency
  • Five-number summary and IQR
  • Distance, midpoint and gradient
  • Special angles
  • Trig ratios on the Cartesian plane
  • Angles of elevation
  • Trig equations
  • Parallelogram properties
  • Volume of a cone

Questions with worked answers

  • Question 1: Statistics (4 marks). For 12; 15; 15; 18; 20; 22; 25 find the mean, median, mode and range.
  • Question 2: Statistics (5 marks). Write down the five-number summary and the interquartile range of 3; 7; 8; 10; 12; 14; 15; 20.
  • Question 3: Analytical geometry (6 marks). A(−1; 2), B(3; 4) and C(5; 0) are the vertices of △ABC. (a) Find AB. (b) Find the midpoint of AC. (c) Show that AB ⊥ BC.
  • Question 4: Trigonometry (3 marks). Without a calculator, evaluate: (sin 60° × tan 45°) ÷ cos 30°
  • Question 5: Trigonometry (5 marks). 3 tan θ − 4 = 0 and θ lies in the third quadrant. Without a calculator, find sin θ + cos θ.
  • Question 6: Trigonometry (4 marks). From a point 30 m from the foot of a building, the angle of elevation to the top is 40°. Find the height of the building.
  • Question 7: Trigonometry (3 marks). Solve for θ, where 0° ≤ θ ≤ 90°: 2 cos θ = 1.3
  • Question 8: Euclidean geometry (4 marks). The diagonals of parallelogram ABCD meet at E. AE = 2x + 1 and EC = x + 4. Find x and AC.
  • Question 9: Measurement (4 marks). A cone has radius 6 cm and perpendicular height 8 cm. Find its volume and slant height.

How to use this paper

  • Check your calculator is in degrees before you start.
  • Sketch the Cartesian plane for any question that gives a quadrant.
  • Mark geometry answers strictly: a statement without a reason earns no mark.
