Grade 9 Maths Formula Sheet

Grade 9 maths formulas in one place: exponent laws, factorising patterns, gradient, Pythagoras, area and volume, interest, and data handling, with notes.

Grade 9 exams don't come with a formula sheet, so you need to know these by heart. This page collects every formula and rule from the CAPS Grade 9 syllabus in one place, grouped by topic, with a note on when to use each one.

Use it to revise before tests, and to check yourself: cover the expression column and see whether you can write each formula from memory.

Exponents

FormulaExpressionNote
Multiplying powersaᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿSame base: add the exponents.
Dividing powersaᵐ ÷ aⁿ = aᵐ⁻ⁿSame base: subtract the exponents.
Power of a power(aᵐ)ⁿ = aᵐⁿMultiply the exponents.
Zero exponenta⁰ = 1For any a ≠ 0.
Negative exponenta⁻ⁿ = 1/aⁿA negative exponent means 'one over'.
Scientific notationa × 10ⁿ, 1 ≤ a < 10n is negative for numbers smaller than 1.

Algebra

FormulaExpressionNote
Distributive lawa(b + c) = ab + acMultiply every term in the bracket.
Square of a sum(a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b²Don't forget the middle term.
Square of a difference(a − b)² = a² − 2ab + b²The last term is always positive.
Difference of two squaresa² − b² = (a − b)(a + b)Two perfect squares with a minus between them.
Trinomialx² + (p + q)x + pq = (x + p)(x + q)Find two numbers that multiply to pq and add to p + q.

Patterns and graphs

FormulaExpressionNote
Linear patternTₙ = bn + cb is the constant difference.
Gradientm = (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁)Change in y divided by change in x.
Straight liney = mx + cm is the gradient; c is the y-intercept.

Geometry and measurement

FormulaExpressionNote
Theorem of Pythagorasc² = a² + b²Right-angled triangles only; c is the hypotenuse.
Area of a triangleA = ½ × b × hh is the perpendicular height.
Area of a trapeziumA = ½(a + b) × ha and b are the parallel sides.
CircleC = 2πr, A = πr²Use the radius, not the diameter.
Volume of a prism or cylinderV = area of base × heightCylinder: V = πr²h.
Angles of a triangle + B̂ + Ĉ = 180°Exterior angle = sum of the interior opposite angles.

Finance, data and probability

FormulaExpressionNote
Simple interestSI = P × i × ni as a decimal; n in years.
Compound growth (year by year)Amount × (1 + i) each yearInterest is added to the amount every year.
Meanmean = sum of values ÷ number of valuesSensitive to outliers.
Rangerange = largest − smallestA simple measure of spread.
ProbabilityP(E) = favourable outcomes ÷ total outcomesAlways between 0 and 1.

How to use them

  • Write the formula before you substitute: teachers give method marks for it.
  • Check that all lengths are in the same unit before using area and volume formulas.
  • For exponents, break numbers into prime bases (2, 3, 5) first.
  • Test a factorisation by expanding it again.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get a formula sheet in the Grade 9 exam?

Usually not. Grade 9 exams are set by schools, and most expect you to know these formulas. Check with your teacher.

Which formulas are most important for Grade 10?

The exponent laws, the factorising patterns, y = mx + c, the gradient formula and Pythagoras are used constantly in Grade 10.
