Grade 9 Mathematics

The complete Grade 9 Mathematics hub: every CAPS Senior Phase topic, practice papers with worked answers, a formula sheet and step-by-step AI help.

Grade 9 is the last year of the Senior Phase, and it's the bridge to the FET Phase maths of Grades 10 to 12. You factorise, solve equations, draw straight-line graphs with gradients and intercepts, use the Theorem of Pythagoras, and calculate simple and compound interest.

At the end of Grade 9 you choose between Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy for Grades 10 to 12, so a strong Grade 9 year keeps your options open. This hub links every CAPS topic guide, practice papers with worked answers and a formula sheet, all written for Grade 9.

Grade 9 topics

How you're assessed

  • Grade 9 maths is assessed by your school: tests, assignments, an investigation and an end-of-year exam.
  • Many schools write two papers in November: Paper 1 (numbers, algebra, patterns, graphs, finance) and Paper 2 (geometry, measurement, data handling, probability).
  • Papers are usually 1½ to 2 hours each. Check your school's exam guidelines for the exact length and marks.
  • Most papers allow a calculator, but you must show your working for method marks.

Study plan

  1. Start with algebraic expressions and factorising: they appear in almost every other topic.
  2. Practise solving equations every day, including word problems.
  3. Learn the straight-line graph y = mx + c and how to find the gradient and intercepts.
  4. Revise geometry with reasons: angles, parallel lines, congruent and similar triangles.
  5. Do a full practice paper under timed conditions, then snap the questions you got wrong.
  6. In the last two weeks, mix topics: exams don't come in topic order.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose Mathematics or Maths Literacy for Grade 10?

Mathematics keeps the most options open for university courses in science, engineering, commerce and health. If you're managing Grade 9 maths with steady practice, Mathematics is usually the better choice. Talk to your teacher about your marks.

What are the hardest Grade 9 topics?

Learners most often struggle with factorising, solving equations with fractions, and geometry reasons. Each has a topic guide on this page with worked examples.

Are there official Grade 9 past papers?

Grade 9 exams are set by schools, so there is no national paper. Use our Grade 9 practice papers, written in the CAPS style with worked answers, and your school's previous papers.
