Grade 9 Maths Practice Paper 2

A Grade 9 CAPS-style Paper 2 practice test: angles and parallel lines, triangles, Pythagoras, area and volume, transformations, data and probability, worked.

This Grade 9 practice paper covers the Paper 2 topics: geometry of straight lines and triangles, the Theorem of Pythagoras, area and volume, transformation geometry, similar triangles, data handling and probability.

Give yourself 45 minutes. In the geometry questions, write a reason next to every statement: in a real exam, most geometry marks are for the reasons.

Topics covered

  • Angles and parallel lines
  • Triangles and the exterior angle
  • Theorem of Pythagoras
  • Area and volume
  • Transformation geometry
  • Similar triangles
  • Data handling
  • Probability

Questions with worked answers

  • Question 1: Parallel lines (4 marks). AB ∥ CD. A transversal makes co-interior angles of 3x + 15° and 2x + 15° with the two lines. Find x.
  • Question 2: Triangles (3 marks). The exterior angle at C of △ABC is 125°, and  = 70°. Find B̂.
  • Question 3: Theorem of Pythagoras (4 marks). A 6.5 m ladder leans against a wall. Its foot is 2.5 m from the wall. How high up the wall does it reach?
  • Question 4: Area (4 marks). Find the area of a circle with a diameter of 14 cm. Give your answer correct to two decimal places.
  • Question 5: Volume (4 marks). A triangular prism has a triangular face with base 6 cm and height 4 cm, and a length of 10 cm. Find its volume.
  • Question 6: Transformations (4 marks). A(−3; 2) is reflected in the y-axis and the image is then translated 2 units down. Find the final coordinates.
  • Question 7: Similar triangles (4 marks). △PQR ||| △STU with PQ = 8 cm, ST = 12 cm and QR = 10 cm. Find TU.
  • Question 8: Data handling (4 marks). For the data 7; 3; 9; 7; 4; 6; 7 find the mean, median, mode and range.
  • Question 9: Probability (4 marks). Two fair dice are rolled. What is the probability that the total is 8?

How to use this paper

  • Draw and label a diagram for every geometry and measurement question.
  • Write reasons in the short form your teacher uses, such as 'co-int ∠s, AB ∥ CD'.
  • Check units in every measurement answer.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official Grade 9 paper?

No. It is a Snap&Learn practice paper in the style of a CAPS Grade 9 Paper 2.

How are geometry questions marked?

Usually one mark for each correct statement and one for each correct reason. A correct angle without a reason often earns only half the marks.

Snap&Learn gives South African Matric learners instant, CAPS-aligned, step-by-step Mathematics solutions. Snap or upload a question and the AI shows every method mark the way the NSC memo awards them. Your first three AI solutions are free.
