Grade 11 Mathematics

The complete Grade 11 Mathematics hub: every CAPS topic for Paper 1 and Paper 2, official past papers, practice papers with worked answers and a formula…

Grade 11 is the year that matters most before Matric. Universities often make provisional offers on Grade 11 results, and the topics, from the quadratic formula and circle geometry to the sine and cosine rules, are the foundation for Grade 12 calculus, series and advanced trigonometry.

This hub links every CAPS Grade 11 topic guide, split by Paper 1 and Paper 2, with worked examples, common mistakes and exam tips. You'll also find official past papers, our practice papers with worked answers, and a Grade 11 formula sheet.

Grade 11 topics

How you're assessed

  • Paper 1 (150 marks, 3 hours): algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities (about 45), number patterns (about 25), functions and graphs (about 45), finance, growth and decay (about 15) and probability (about 20).
  • Paper 2 (150 marks, 3 hours): statistics (about 20), analytical geometry (about 30), trigonometry (about 50), and Euclidean geometry and measurement (about 50).
  • Mark allocations follow the CAPS examination guidelines; your school's or province's paper may vary by a few marks.
  • The November exam is set by your school or province. Many provinces write common papers.

Study plan

  1. Make the quadratic formula and the discriminant automatic: they appear across Paper 1.
  2. For functions, practise all three families with horizontal shifts and finding equations from sketches.
  3. Learn the circle theorems with their exact reasons, and practise the proofs you need to know.
  4. Drill reduction formulae and the sine, cosine and area rules: trigonometry is a third of Paper 2.
  5. Write at least two full papers under timed conditions (3 hours, 150 marks) before November.
  6. Snap every question you get wrong, and keep a list of your weak topics to revise again.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Grade 11 so important?

Universities often use Grade 11 final results for early or provisional admission, and Grade 12 builds directly on Grade 11 topics.

What are the hardest Grade 11 topics?

Learners usually find circle geometry proofs, trigonometric identities and general solutions, and functions with horizontal shifts the hardest. Each has a guide on this page.

Where can I find Grade 11 past papers?

Our Grade 11 papers page links official common papers and memos from the Western Cape Education Department portal, plus Snap&Learn practice papers with worked answers.

Can Snap&Learn help with Grade 11 homework?

Yes. Set your grade to Grade 11 and snap any question: you get a step-by-step explanation using Grade 11 methods, with the marks a memo would award for each step.

Snap&Learn gives South African Matric learners instant, CAPS-aligned, step-by-step Mathematics solutions. Snap or upload a question and the AI shows every method mark the way the NSC memo awards them. Your first three AI solutions are free.
